Seiko is one of the few fully integrated watch manufactures. We design and develop our own movements using leading-edge technology. You can sort the designs of Seiko watches and narrow them further using the movement number and the various serial number portions. The last four digits represent the model number you are looking for. Write out the entire serial number and the breakdown of its components for future reference and add it. All Seiko's should have a Serial number on the case back The first number in the Serial is the last number in the year of production, and so if it is a new watch and you see an 8 it should be the year 2008 The second number in the Serial is the month the watch was made if you see a 4 it will be the month of April. Simple and quick, this page allows you to determine the exact date of manufacture of a Seiko watch basing on the caliber and serial number printed on the bottom plate or in the edge. Probably this is the worst most detailed database of all Seiko production since 1950 over the web, including movement revisions (ex: 7S26B or C) and various extra.

All Seiko's should have a Serial number on the case back
The first number in the Serial is the last number in the year of production, and so if it is a new watch and you see an 8 it should be the year 2008
The second number in the Serial is the month the watch was made if you see a 4 it will be the month of April
most Seiko serial are 6 digits long and so a serial of 86XXXX would be a watch made in April of 2008
The key to the whole trick is knowing what movement is in side and older movement like the 6309 was made in the late 70's and 80's and so a watch with 86XXXX would be April 1988 and so on ...
A note on months since only one numberis used for the months Oct / Nov / Dec being two numbers is noted by letter
if you see a Zero it is a letter O for October N= Nov D= Dec
8DXXXX would be December 2008 8OXXXX would be October 2008
It does help to know a little about movement production dates when dating watches on the street but if you have a computer handy you can always drop by these fine websites:

Find the manufacture date of any Seiko watch
Seiko watches have a 6 or 7 character serial number on their casebacks. The second character can be a letter but the rest are all numbers. You can use the Seiko serial number in conjunction with the movement number to calculate the year of manufacture. The month and last digit of the Seiko'a date of manufacture is calculated using the serial number and then narrowed down to a decade using my database of Seiko movement manufacture dates. You will be given an eBay link to check the value, useful links such as manuals, etc and for quartz models the battery information.
If more than one date is returned then either I lack data for that Seiko movement or it was made for over a decade. For details of my Seiko movements list click here. For information about how this actually decodes and how to decode a Seiko serial yourself click here (also has a video showing how to find your serial number and movement).
To get the best chance of getting only one date returned it is best to enter your Seiko movement in the 2nd box. The boxes are not case sensitive. The movement can contain the letter S, which can look very similar to a 5.

Please note, the new Seiko 5 sports cannot be dated by serial number. If you have a 2019 or newer Seiko 5 sports, then the 6 digit serial is actually a production number and cannot be used for dating purposes.
